چکیده

We have evaluated the energy loss of swift hydrogen ions moving through a solid target, paying special attention to the effect due to the polarization of the projectile. Our calculation is done in the framework of the dielectric formalism, taking into account the contribution to the energy loss due to the charge fraction of protons and hydrogen atoms, the electronic capture and loss processes, and the polarization of the projectile. The electronic structure of the projectile is described by a hydrogen-like model screened by the target electrons. We have found that the polarization of the projectile is a non-negligible contribution to the energy loss of the hydrogen atoms in the energy range around the maximum of the stopping power. The calculated stopping power (accounting for all the above mentioned effects) agrees satisfactorily well with the experimental data in a wide projectile velocity region. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Electronic energy-density effects in ion tracks of metals

High resolution Auger-electron spectroscopy has been applied to the interaction of swift heavy ions with atomically clean metallic solids. Spectra have been taken for fast projectile electrons and for charge-state equilibrated ions at normal incidence on micro crystalline beryllium samples, Al(100) single crystals and several metallic glasses (Al87La7Ni5Zr1, Ni78B14Si8, Co66Si16B12Fe4Mo2). From...

First Observation of Projectile Fragment Polarization in High Energy Ion Collisions

A new polarization phenomenon observed for projectile fragments in high-energy heavy ion collisions is reported. Polarization was as large a s about 20% at maximum and exhibited a systematic dependence on the momentum of the fragment. The behavior of the polarization is interpreted in terms of a simple knematical argument. The prospect of producing polarized RI beam for practical applications i...

The stopping of low energy ions in reactions of astrophysical interest

The velocity dependence of the stopping power of swift protons and deuterons in low energy collisions with hydrogen and helium gas targets is investigated with the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger coupled-channels equations using molecular orbital wavefunctions. At low projectile energies the stopping is mainly due to nuclear stopping, charge exchange of the electron, and ex...

Multiframe interferometry as a diagnostic to measure the free electron density in laser generated plasma

The investigation of phenomena concerning the interaction of heavy ions with plasmas is a key research activity of the plasma physics group at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). The laboratory at GSI offers the unique opportunity to measure the charge state distribution and the energy loss of swift heavy ions after they have penetrated a hot and dense plasma [1]. The laser induced...
